Spice Cabinet
Thesis Statement
How can I create a platform that enables individuals to build meals based on the herbs and spices they have available?

Project Narrative
As an aspiring home chef, I developed a passion for learning how herbs and spices can enhance the flavor of my cooking. I often found myself wondering, "I have these spices—how can I use them?" or "I have this ingredient—which seasonings pair well with it?" As I searched for answers online, I became overwhelmed by how scattered and difficult the information was to navigate. To solve this problem, I began compiling my research and organizing it into categories, which eventually became the foundation for this app. The goal of this project is to provide users with the essential knowledge needed to build flavorful meals using the herbs, spices, and seasonings they already have on hand.

Goals
My goal was to help individuals make the most of the herbs and spices they already have while providing a foundation for creating flavorful and well-balanced meals.

Audience
The intended audience for this app is home cooks who want to expand their knowledge of herbs and spices and use them to create more flavorful and confident meals.

Research Process
I began my research by exploring the differences between herbs and spices. Herbs are the leafy parts of a plant, while spices are derived from its seeds, flowers, fruits, roots, or bark. I also examined how both herbs and spices are available in either fresh or dried forms. From there, I researched how different herbs and spices complement one another, as well as the types of dishes they are commonly used in. The final stage of my research focused on connecting available herbs and spices to recipes, making it easier for users to create meals with the ingredients they.      already have.

Visual Development
Logo
I began the design process by collecting textured images of various herbs and spices. I used these images to explore how the flavors, colors, and visual characteristics of seasonings could influence the direction of my logo design. Initially, I focused primarily on flavor profiles, but I found this approach too restrictive. I wanted the logo to represent the broad variety of herbs and spices rather than a single category of seasoning.
To create a more inclusive concept, I drew inspiration from a familiar space: the “spice cabinet,” where a diverse collection of seasonings is stored and used. This idea became the foundation for the logo’s identity. I also analyzed the colors found in the herb and spice imagery I collected, incorporating those tones into the design to create a connection to natural ingredients.
As a final design element, I transformed the dot of the letter “i” in “Spice” into a leaf shape and applied a color gradient to represent the range of seasoning intensity, from mild to hot. The addition of green and yellow tones emphasizes freshness while creating balance and contrast within the overall design.

App
I began developing the app structure around the concept of creating and discovering recipes. I narrowed the focus to a system that identifies and connects herbs, spices, and recipes based on the ingredients users have available. To expand this concept, I incorporated a protein section to provide additional meal-building options and create a more complete recipe experience.
The app was influenced by the idea of helping users understand how to utilize the seasonings they already own, discover ingredient substitutions, and create personalized recipes based on their preferences. I added a recipe feature that allows users to search for new dishes while saving and accessing their favorite recipes.
Additional features include an inventory system that helps users track their available herbs and spices to maintain freshness and reduce waste. The app also provides educational resources where users can learn techniques for blending, cooking with, and drying their own herbs and spices. By creating an account and personalized profile, users can save their information and receive recipe suggestions tailored to their individual tastes and cooking preferences.
Symbols
For the app’s navigation system, I developed a set of symbols to create a clear and intuitive user experience. A chef’s hat represents the cooking section, a recipe list icon identifies the recipe area, and a leaf stalk symbolizes the spice cabinet where users can manage their herbs and spices. A user silhouette represents the profile section to provide a familiar visual cue.
To create contrast and maintain consistency with the overall brand identity, I used yellow icons against a green background. For the food-related icons, I incorporated colors inspired by the herbs and spices researched throughout the project to create a visual connection between the ingredients and the app’s design.

Conclusion
Throughout this project, I focused on expanding my knowledge of herbs and spices, including their origins, flavor profiles, and various cooking applications. I began incorporating the techniques I researched into my own cooking, allowing me to gain firsthand experience and a deeper understanding of how different seasonings can be combined. This process was especially valuable when developing the spice-blending feature for the app, as it helped me create a more practical and user-focused experience.
Due to time constraints, I researched as much as I could. However, the process provided valuable insight into managing a project with multiple components and evolving ideas. One strength I discovered was my ability to work effectively under tight deadlines while balancing various project requirements. A challenge I identified was my tendency to become highly focused on specific details, which occasionally caused me to lose sight of the overall project goals. By reviewing my progress and reorganizing my priorities, I was able to refocus and continue moving forward.
Overall, this project allowed me to develop my research, problem-solving, and design skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for creating user-centered solutions.
